CDMX Plant-Based Street Food Guide
One thing Mexico is famous for is its street food scene. Before arriving, I was sure that I wouldn’t get to participate in this as there would be no options for me as someone looking to eat plant-based.
However, to my absolute surprise, there are a plethora of plant-based street food options in CDMX, so let’s dig in to the best ones!
Paxil Plant-Based Seafood
Location: Orizaba 77, Roma Norte
Recommended Dishes: Fish tacos, Tuna Tostada, Ceviche
Price Per Dish: $45 - $50 Mexican Pesos or $2.20 - $2.45 USD, recommended to order 2 dishes
This place might just be the most innovative and exciting plant-based options in the city, and possibly that I’ve ever tried in all of my travels. It is a tiny street food stall that is only open from 1:30 pm - 7:00 pm, and closed on Tuesdays.
They serve plant-based versions of familiar seafood items such as tuna fish tacos, made from mushrooms (left dish), tuna tostadas, made from tomatoes (right dish), and ceviche. I have tried every item on their menu, and each one is absolutely delicious and comes with a plethora of toppings and sauces. I just can’t recommend this place enough.
It is also around the corner from Panadería Rosetta, an iconic cafe and place to work in Roma Norte, and Sin Pecado, a fully plant-based dessert stand that serves crêpes and smoothies.
Por Siempre Vegano 2
Location: Coahuila 169, Roma Norte
Recommended Dishes: Tacos Al Pastor, Suadero, Campechano, Chicharrón, Milanesa, Big Bebe
Price Per Taco: $20 - $30 Mexican Pesos or $1.00 - $1.45 USD, recommended to order 3 tacos
The sister location to Por Siempre Vegano I wrote about in my CDMX Food Guide is a street food stall! As you can see in my humble set up in the photo on the left, they serve almost the exact same items, with the addition of some lovely fruit tarts and donuts- all 100% plant-based. There is very limited seating so most people end up sitting on the ground with their plates which I realize won’t be for everybody but I honestly find so much fun.
This is one of my favorite food establishments in Mexico City, and I’ve eaten here countless times. One thing to note is that their hours can be somewhat unpredictable, even though on Google it says one thing, I have arrived to a closed stall before. But fear not, the restaurant location is not far if that does happen!
Gatorta
Location: Puebla 182, Roma Norte
Recommended Dishes: Tortas, Tacos, Gringas
Price Per Dish: $25 - $80 Mexican Pesos or $1.20 - $3.90 USD, depending on if you’re buying a single taco or a massive Torta (sandwich) like the one pictured)
This place is run by two very cool-looking girls, and their food is absolutely bangin’. The Tortas (sandwiches) are massive and filled with fun plant-based meats made from tofu, soy, and gluten.
I can also recommend the:
Tacos al Pastor: pork with pineapple
Suadero: sausage
Chorizo: sausage
Milanesa: breaded steak
They serve fully plant-based desserts as well, which are SO yummy!
Street Fruit
Location: All Over CDMX
Recommended Dishes: Mango Con Chamoy
Price: This will vary slightly from place to place, but roughly $30 Mexican Pesos per Cup or $1.50USD
If you don’t know yet, Chamoy is a sweet-savoury-slightly spicy sauce that Mexican people love to put on fruit, ice cream, and even popcorn! It definitely isn’t for everyone, but I absolutely love it and recommend you put it on just about everything, or at least give it a try…
If not, you can pretty much choose any fruit you want for a refreshing snack at any point during the day - or combine a few different ones!
Fresh Pressed Juices
Location: All Over CDMX, but specifically Mercado Medellín
Recommended Dishes: This is up to you!
Price Per Juice: This will also vary but around $25 Mexican Pesos or $1.22 USD
One of my favorite parts of being in a country with a climate like Mexico City is having a fresh pressed juice every single day of my life. When my mom was visiting she also got hooked and we made a juice stop at the iconic Mercado Medellín in Roma Norte part of our daily routine. Feel free to try every single combination!
